Keeping busy at SHLC...

A busy week at SHLC...

So the first week of February has come and gone! Where did January go? Well I can tell you where I went this week.

This week I was teaching a Pre-GED Science class on Earth & Space Sciences. One of the topics was on earthquakes and volcanoes. As we all know too well, there was a massive earthquake in Haiti. After we talked about the situation in Haiti, I decided that we would take a trip there. I took my class to Haiti, through the web, with the help of our good friends at Google Earth. We looked at some satellite images of the country and got a better understanding of where Haiti is. We also learned why an earthquake might happen there.

The earthquake happened on January 12, 2010. But did you know that there were 52 aftershocks of 4.5 or greater between the 12th and 24th of January 2010? That is absolutely mind boggling! I had no idea about that! The country has been terrorized by multiple earthquakes!

That was one of my favourite classes as we learned a lot. We got to take a field trip without having to ride an uncomfortable yellow bus! And nobody needed a signed permission slip! I really hope that we can take more cyber trips in the future. We are so fortunate that we can incorporate technology into the classroom.

As for next week...I think I am going to introduce everyone to my new umbilical cord....I know you’re wondering what that is all about. Stay tuned...
