My Unexpected
Instructing for a year. I put the headset on and press record. I think "been there/done that", nothing can surprise me anymore.
heh
There is no sitting back and going through the motions at Good Learning Anywhere. When you least expect it, a hand will go up, a question will be asked, and the flood gates have been opened and you have yourself a discussion. In those moments you realize, with a smile, that you aren't just talking to a computer screen!
My Introduction to Blogging course has been that kind of experience.
This course is not only based solely on the idea of self-publishing. This course is not only about the "how-to" of blogging. This course is about discovery: about yourself, about others, about the world.
True to the blogosphere's diverse nature, our group is made up of elders, spiritual leaders, woodworkers, seniors advocates, artists, knitters, crocheters, moms, dads, grandpas and grandmas and we even have a
tolepainter.....had no idea what that was, but now I do:)
We created a closed blog for us to play in, a kind of sandbox. Yesterday, we learned how to post to a blog: They've taken to it like rock stars, posting insights, writing prompts, and even requesting ideas on what to blog about! When I logged into our blog after class to see how everyone did, I never in a million years expected the wonderful responses and entries that were posted there.
Here is a glimpse into what we've been up to: (btw, olde thymer is still looking for ideas for her garden)

Awesome, yes?
How 'bout this little treat:
Before our third class, I asked everyone to think about what they would blog about if they created a blog today.
I expected answers that centered around personal interests and hobbies.
Well!
The discussion certainly started with personal interests and hobbies. It then very quickly evolved into "why don't we have a group blog" and "I discovered this blog and I think it would be good resource for your interests".
HA!
I sat in front of my computer clapping my hands.
THIS is what it's about: learners taking what you've been talking about and running with it.
I mean, these people are not only working together in class, but they are creating connections that will transcend this four day course!
And all this from people who had "heard about blog but weren't too sure about it"!
This is my unexpected.

Spring is in the Air!
Spring has arrived!...or at least it felt like that last week...and now I am watching snow flurries! But that’s what happens in Spring in Canada. You never know what kind of weather you’re going to get.
Well I can tell you what you’re going to get from Sioux Hudson Literacy Council and Good Learning Anywhere this spring! You are going to get offered a wide range of courses that meet a cross-section of needs/wants/desires/likes etc...you name it!
Technology: Are you new to online learning? Do you want to surf the net, email friends/family, socialize, and do these things safely? Have you ever wanted to journal online and learn Microsoft courses?
Self-Direction/Self-Management: Are you looking to understand change, find balance, build self-confidence, be more positive, improve self-discipline, learn how to set goals, communicate effectively, express emotions and better manage your valuable time? Does time mange you or do you manage your time?
Reading: What is fiction and non-fiction? Do you enjoy Canadian stories with a focus on native, First Nations, and Métis writers?
Pre-GED Science: How important is the environment to you? Have you ever wanted to travel to space? When was the last time you did a science project? Did you know physics is used in roller coasters? Do you want to ride the world’s fastest roller coaster?
Money Management: Do you budget to meet your goals? Do you know how? How do we get a deal? Do you have any shopping tips? Are credit cards bad or good? What is good credit and bad credit? Why do we bank on the internet? Is that really safe?
We also have many other courses on different essential skills. We have courses on mathematics, geography, history, economics, aviation, spelling, and diabetes.
We also have a very special day coming up on June 21, 2010. Can tell me what day that is? If so, I will share a little inside information on what we are doing to make it a memorable day.
If I haven’t caught your interest yet, I have done poor job using my essential skill: Communication. And if you feel these courses do not interest you, I challenge you to be flexible and keep an open mind. Maybe you will learn something new? Or maybe you can refer a friend and family member who might be interested?
Below is a link to our course calendar. We look forward to seeing you in class!

The 2 Keys to Life
I met Waubgeshig Rice...online!
Today I had the pleasure of meeting Waub online in a Centra classroom.
It was a really good experience to meet someone who had a dream, pursued it, and became successful with it. There were many positive messages that came from Waub. He talked about the importance of being humble and respectful. He talked about surrounding ourselves with the right people. And he talked about how cool it is to be able to do what you love.
And from the sounds of it, he inspired a few people immediately. That tells me the session was a success!
Waub also talked about the importance of reading to our kids and youth in our communities.
To echo Waub’s points, I would like to share an acceptance speech from Will Smith, the famous and talented Hollywood actor/artist. In this speech, Will Smith talks about 2 important keys to life. One of the points echoes Waub's thoughts on reading.
Click on the video and let me know what you think.
On behalf of SHLC, and all of our guests, we would like to thank Waub for his time and sharing his story.
Remember: “Love what you do and do what you love.” Will Smith.

2010 Winter Olympics
Olympic fever has arrived...
For those of you that know me, and for those that are getting to know me, you will know that I am a sports fan. I love and respect all sports! I think sports add so much to our lives. Sports help us build communication skills, competitiveness, flexibility, teamwork, athleticism, balance and most important, they are fun...at least I think!
As we know, the 2010 Winter Olympics are well under way. I will admit, I was not that excited until about the week before they started. Now, I can’t get enough of it...I am constantly following up to see what is happening...it’s almost a distraction but such a positive distraction! The Olympics are really bringing our country together. And some countries are now saying we are too patriotic. Have we ever heard that before? I can’t remember a recent positive event in Canada that has accomplished this.
And when we look at our athletes, I wonder how many of them have said that competing in the Olympics is impossible. And I compare that to what we go through every day. Impossible is nothing but a big word. We have the power to change. When something looks impossible, that is not a fact. It is an opinion. In my opinion, I look at the word impossible as an opportunity to make change. I dare you to re-evaluate what the word impossible means to you. I believe that it is temporary and it is potential...the potential to change.
This is my lesson from the Olympics so far. I hope I can learn more from our athletes...it has been great so far! What have you learned from the 2010 Winter Olympics? GO CANADA GO!
